Two for the Road is a series in which two artists touring together chat about playing shows, life backstage, and more. In the latest installment of the series, Spoon drummer Jim Eno and indie folk artist Margaret Glaspy discuss returning to the road.
Spoon are nothing if not consistent. Their records never fail to impress, and their live show is a guaranteed great time. So it’s perhaps not terribly surprising that their latest LP, Lucifer on the Sofa, is widely being hailed as one of their best, and fans are as hyped as ever to see the Austin rockers returning to the road. The only question, really, was who would be supporting them on the accompanying tour.
Well, Spoon drummer Jim Eno knew the answer right away: Margaret Glaspy. Their joint tour is underway now, and you can get tickets to their upcoming dates here.
Having been a fan of the New York indie folk artist’s 2016 album, Emotions and Math, Eno had long wanted to work with Glaspy. Glaspy, in turn, had a long held appreciation for how spoon are, in her words “totally the essence” of the rock originality. The two projects may not sound like sonic siblings, but Glaspy notes they have “similar mindsets” when it comes to approaching “really performative” music built for guitars, bass, and drums.
So when it came time to book their Lucifer on the Sofa supporting tour, Eno knew Glaspy would make a perfect opener. (As would former Artist of the Month honorees Geese, who are playing with Spoon during the band’s May tour leg.) What’s more, Glaspy was one of those artist’s who had unfortunately timed their latest album’s release (the fantastic Devotion) to March 2020 — right when it became impossible to tour behind it.
Now, however, the time has come for both Spoon and Glaspy to put rubber to road once again. Before they headed out together, Glaspy and Eno got together on a Zoom call for our latest edition of Two for the Road. Together, they chat about finally getting in front of crowds again, what they plan to do between shows, and more. Glaspy even teases a new album in the works, while Eno discusses his work with female and nonbinary producers in Project Traction.
