Disney and LucasFilm have offered the first trailer for the upcoming Indiana Jones 5, which is officially titled Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The newly revealed trailer offers a glimpse at a de-aged Harrison Ford, going toe-to-toe against a familiar adversary: Nazis.
Though it’s not explicit in the trailer, the upcoming film will center around the space race between the United States and Soviet Union in 1969. “The simple fact is that the moon-landing program was run by a bunch of ex-Nazis,” co-screenwriter Jez Butterworth recently explained. “How ‘ex’ they are is the question. And it gets up Indy’s nose.” The film’s main villain Voller, played by Mads Mikkelsen, is based on Nazi scientist/eventual NASA engineer Wernher von Braun.
Based on the trailer, it looks as if Indy and Voller had crossed paths back in the ’40s — when the former looked about 40 years younger. Based on the flashback scenes, it seems as if they were both after the same artifact, leading to the hero’s capture and an epic confrontation on a train. Whatever the object is (likely the titular dial), it’s a fair bet Voller is still seeking it in the ’60s. “There is something that could make the world a much better place to live in,” Mikkelsen explained to Empire. “He would love to get his hands on it. Indiana Jones wants to get his hands on it as well. And so, we have a story.”
In addition to the digitally younger Ford, the Dial of Destiny preview also reveals Phoebe Waller-Bridge as Indy’s god-daughter, Helena; Boyd Holbrook as Voller’s “lapdog,” Klaber; Toby Jones as a companion of Jones’ in the ’40s; and a brief look at Antonio Banderas in a yet-unspecified role. There’s also the return of John Rhys-Davies as Sallah, the beloved character from Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Last Crusade.
Directed by James Mangold (Logan), Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny is scheduled to arrive in theaters on June 30th, 2023.
