Mel Gibson’s back in the director’s chair with his epic World War II drama Hacksaw Ridge.

The film tells the true story of Desmond T. Doss, the first conscientious objector in US military history to win the Congressional Medal of Honor. Doss was working as a medic stationed in Japan circa 1945; during the Battle of Okinawa, he risked his life multiple times saving dozens of soldiers, as well as single-handedly removing 75 casualties off the battlefield under heavy fire.

Andrew Garfield will play Doss, topping a cast that includes Vince Vaughn, Hugo Weaving, Richard Roxburgh, Rachel Griffiths, Teresa Palmer, Luke Bracey, and Sam Worthington. The screenplay was written by Robert Schenkkan (TV’s The Pacific) and Randall Wallace (We Were Soldiers, Pearl Harbor).
